Hummingbird Watercolor
Living in California affords me the greatest joy of being able to bird watch….and see HUMMINGBIRDS! We don’t have hummingbirds in Hawai’i, so they are a real treat to see. They are tiny and full of personality. I always wanted to paint a hummingbird watercolor so I am happy I took the time and did it.

Making Progress: Flowers first
I started with the background in saturated oranges and yellows. Then I sketched in my images with a black thin pen (Micron). Next step was to work on the flowers and leaves!
Special Appearance: Ladybug
I decided to add a tiny ladybug to this painting. When I was a little girl my mom got me a subscription to Cricket magazine (does anyone remember that mag??) and in the magazine was a…cricket, and as I recall the cricket had a ladybug friend. Also- to me, to this day, I still get excited whenever I see a ladybug (provided it’s not of the invasive non-native variety. ๐ )
Final Details: Hummingbird Watercolor
My final step for my bird and seahorse paintings is always, always, the eye. I just wait until I am complete with my painting- then I step away from it for a day or two. I’ll come back to the studio and study the finished art and decide how I want to paint the eye as the final touch. I think this hummingbird looks rather thoughtful and happily pensive.
Mahalo for being here,
